Djabraba in my heart...
This page is dedicated to the beautiful island of Brava, Cape Verde.
Djabraba is sort of a nickname for Brava. Brava is an island like no other on this earth for me. It left me with such fond childhood memories and I wouldn't want to have it any other way. I hope to inform you about the island of Brava and also a little about Cape Verde.
This is just a brief history of when Brava was discovered.
It was around the year 1460 that Don Henrique commanded two navigators Diego Gomes and Antonio Da Nola to return to Portugal from their journey to Guinea. On their return they encountered strong winds and currents, which veered them off course. "I see land", somebody yelled out. It couldn't be Africa, which they had just left behind. And, it couldn't be Portugal for which they were heading to. It was on May first of this year which they encountered the island of São Tiago.
Upon their arrival the island was uninhabited and thus marks the discovery of the first island of the Archipelago of Cape Verde. Two years would go by before they would come upon the island of São João.
On June 24th 1462 they encountered the island of São João. This island was also uninhabited upon their arrival. Due to its wild vegetation the island of São João would become known as the island of Brava (derived from the word "bravia" meaning wild in Portuguese).
